Chapter 9
Laykin picked her way across the road, making sure to stick to the path Jonah trod. Duskâs last light expired about ten minutes ago, and if the prior night was any indication, the moon would rise in a couple of minutes with even less face to reflect the sun. She stared at the dark shape a couple of steps ahead of her and her gaze drifted to the firm backside sheâd been following all day. Her fingers tingled with the desire to touch his warm, bare skin.
Stop. Youâre here for an assignment. Not to jump the shifterâs bones. Pay attention to your task. An unwise step in the uneven dirt could result in a twisted ankle or worse.
Stay on your story. She stubbornly glued her gaze to Jonahâs backpack rather than his butt and wiped her mind clean of her dirty thoughts.
Unfortunately, that brought her mind to her other problem, her screaming muscles.
Jonah gave her another pack of anti-inflammatories when they decided to push on instead of stopping for dinner. The idea of another round of tasteless meals held little appeal at the time. Now, her legs wobbled, her butt burned, her feet craved a good massage, and her stomach begged for a cheeseburger and fries. Maybe she should go back to fantasizing about Jonah after all.
Best not.
Luckily, the dark would hide their movement from any humans vacationing in their cabins, like the solitary one with dark windows she passed about five minutes ago after exiting the tree line. Razelleâs minions could be watching this small community. Demons and vampires could see in low or no light, as could many shifters.
Donât think of your worst fear. It would always show up. At least thatâs what her mother would say. Think positive.
Positive equated to about a half mile for a real bed, a hot shower, and a hot meal, according to Jonah. Her muscles almost sighed in anticipation, then started protesting again as the ground began a steep rise. Only a short distance, right along this road to the Gold Mine. He said Steve had some rooms behind the general store for rent.
Jonah pushed a flattened hand down and crouched behind a boulder at the top of the short rise.
She joined him, her movements stiff as she sunk to her crouch. She wanted to ask what he saw, but speaking might give away their position. Not that her scuffing along wouldnât have done that in the first place. Jonah wore hiking boots, like her, but he seemed to make less than half the noise. Must be a coyote thing.
As quietly as he had snuck up on her the night before, he slid off his pack and set the bag near her. âI want to do some recon,â he murmured into her ear. âAre you okay by yourself?â
She nodded. Better here than jumped by a load of biters. She wanted to snicker every time she used Jonahâs slang term. Separating vampire from demon could be difficult at face value. Both needed human blood for sustenance.
